MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

The Art of Igniting Minds

Over four decades in the classroom have honed my approach, yet one truth remains constant: teaching is the art of igniting young minds. Like gathering kindling, I meticulously craft engaging lessons using media like PowerPoint to spark interest. But information alone is lifeless fuel—the true fire springs from students' inherent curiosity when adequately stoked. My role is coaxing those first flames through patience and care.

I tailor teaching methods to diverse learning styles, utilizing group work, projects, and activities to engage visual, auditory, and kinetic learners. Students are encouraged to actively participate through leading discussions, peer teaching opportunities, and self-directed study. I provide personalized feedback and support to empower students to take ownership of their educational journey. Mistakes are reframed as opportunities for growth within a nurturing environment.

Inclusivity is paramount through incorporating diverse voices in the curriculum and promoting respectful dialogue. Students are empowered to share perspectives, and interactive activities like role-playing build empathy across differences. I leverage technology to increase access and engagement, from digital collaboration tools to platforms that facilitate creativity. Internships, field trips, and community service projects enrich learning while fostering civic awareness.

A question about Native Americans adopting horses recently ignited a fiery discussion in my Southwestern Borderlands course. By revolutionizing desert travel, equine newcomers transformed tribal lifeways. This revelation sparked further inquiry that illuminated the entire class. I know a fire has been lit when education transcends classroom walls to kindle new passions.

Such moments rekindle my passion for guiding discovery. Like ashes obscuring dormant embers, familiarity can dim teaching's vibrancy over time. But students' enthusiasm clears that ash, revealing the glowing core beneath. Together, we fuel fresh flames. The most tremendous honor ever paid to me as an instructor is when, after the class ends, a student tells me that they have found their passion in my subject and would like information on how to pursue it as a life's calling. It has been my honor to populate my field over these years with many young minds ignited in a history or ethics class that are now repeating the process. I realized early in my life that I, as one person, can only do so much, but if I could reproduce myself in a hundred people, I could do so much more toward changing our world. Since that day, I have endeavored to surround myself with champions.

My lessons aim not to fill vessels but to ignite pilots already aglow within each mind. I embrace the privilege of stirring students' innate curiosity and watching them illuminate the world. Just as mentors ignited my journey, I now pass the torch.

The fires I spark may warm a diversity of paths. Yet my foundational aim remains to further Christ's light through education. Scripture compares God's word to a lamp for our feet; teaching is my conduit for imparting that radiant wisdom. Whatever the subject, I strive to embody Christian virtues and perspective.

Ultimately, my philosophy boils down to this: teach with heart, adapt with wisdom, ignite with purpose. I tend to each spark, ensuring flames rise high to brighten lives for generations to come.
